Open-Sourcing Draft Orders

After rigorous testing, Draft Orders are now open-sourced as part of our latest update. You can now create, update, and confirm orders directly from the Admin UI.

We tested Draft Orders with users on Medusa Cloud earlier this year with the goal of quickly getting the feature tested in production use cases to validate the product experience, collect feedback, and ensure stability before rolling it out more broadly.
Today, we’re open-sourcing Draft Orders, making it generally available to all.
A primitive for Order Management
Draft Orders are built on top of Medusa’s Order Edit API, which provides a generic way to modify orders. The plugin adds a purpose-built UI in Medusa Admin for creating, updating, and confirming Draft Orders.
This simplifies the operational work for a range of use cases, including:
- Custom order creation flows: create draft orders for negotiated B2B sales or quote-based workflows
- Order approval flows: require order approval based on customer segments.
- White-glove service: let customer service create special orders on behalf of customers
You can read more about the Draft Order features here.
What’s Next
We’ll continue to develop the Draft Orders experience, including more options for modifications. By releasing it openly, we’re inviting our community to contribute ideas and feedback on further improvements of our Order Management capabilities.
Draft Orders are the latest addition to Medusa’s commerce primitives, which are powerful building blocks for creating custom commerce workflows. The most reliable way to run these workflows at scale is with Medusa Cloud. Medusa Cloud allows you to skip the hassle of managing servers and scalability while making your developers more efficient.
