Short answer

Medusa, Shopify, commercetools, and BigCommerce all publish MCP servers. Medusa offers a Docs MCP server for coding agents and the Medusa MCP server, which gives AI tools read-only access to Medusa Cloud store data, custom API routes, and deployment logs. Shopify, commercetools, and BigCommerce each ship docs servers plus servers for catalog, cart, or store management.

Which ecommerce platforms have MCP servers?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and ChatGPT use to call external services. Ecommerce MCP servers fall into two groups: docs servers that help coding agents write code, and store servers that read or change store data. The table lists the servers each vendor documents.

How Medusa's two MCP servers differ

The Medusa Docs MCP server is for writing code. It answers development questions from the Medusa documentation and returns curated, step-by-step implementation guides for common tasks.

The Medusa MCP server is for working with a running store. Ask it for recent orders, abandoned carts from a custom route, or why a deployment failed. It works on every Medusa Cloud plan, and needs Medusa v2.12.4+ and an environment built on or after October 8, 2026, so that Cloud has indexed its API routes.

The Medusa MCP server also searches the docs, so you don't need both servers for general questions. Use the Docs MCP server when you want its implementation guides.

How to connect Medusa's MCP servers to Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor

Both Medusa MCP servers are remote Streamable HTTP servers that authenticate in the browser. In Claude Code and Codex, run:

# Claude Code (then run /mcp and choose Authenticate)
claude mcp add --transport http medusa-commerce https://cloud.medusajs.com/mcp
claude mcp add --transport http medusa https://docs.medusajs.com/mcp
# Codex
codex mcp add medusa-commerce --url https://cloud.medusajs.com/mcp
codex mcp login medusa-commerce

In Cursor and VS Code, add the same URLs to .cursor/mcp.json or .vscode/mcp.json. Gemini CLI uses the Medusa extension at https://github.com/medusajs/gemini-cli-extension. The Medusa MCP server is also available as a Claude connector and, while OpenAI reviews the app, as a custom plugin in ChatGPT's developer mode.

Medusa Agent Skills complement the MCP servers

Medusa Agent Skills are instruction packs that teach coding agents Medusa's patterns for backend features, admin customizations, and storefronts. MCP servers answer questions on demand, while skills give the agent the conventions up front. Install them in Claude Code with Copy to clipboard/plugin marketplace add medusajs/medusa-agent-skills followed by Copy to clipboard/plugin install medusa-dev@medusa, or in other agents with Copy to clipboardnpx skills add medusajs/medusa-agent-skills.

When Medusa's MCP servers are not the right choice

Medusa's MCP servers have limits you should know before you choose:

  • You need an agent to change store data. The Medusa MCP server can't create, update, or delete data, and calls Store API routes as a guest. Use the Admin or Store API directly.
  • You self-host Medusa. The Medusa MCP server only connects to stores deployed on Medusa Cloud.
  • You want a docs server with no account. The Medusa Docs MCP server requires a Medusa Cloud account. Shopify Dev MCP and commercetools Knowledge MCP need no authentication.
  • You need buyer-facing agent checkout over MCP. Shopify's UCP servers and BigCommerce Storefront MCP target shopping agents. With Medusa, you build those tools on the Store API.

Common questions

Does Medusa have an MCP server?

Yes. Medusa provides two MCP servers: the Medusa MCP server at https://cloud.medusajs.com/mcp for read-only access to Medusa Cloud stores, and the Docs MCP server at https://docs.medusajs.com/mcp for answers from the Medusa documentation.

Is the Medusa MCP server free?

The Medusa MCP server is available on all Medusa Cloud plans. Medusa Cloud plans start at $29 per month.

Can the Medusa MCP server read my custom API routes?

Yes. The Medusa MCP server finds and calls custom GET API routes under the /store and /admin prefixes, using each route's comments and TypeScript types. Routes under other prefixes and routes defined in plugins are not indexed.

Does the Medusa Docs MCP server need an account?

Yes. The Medusa Docs MCP server is available to Medusa Cloud users and authenticates with OAuth or a Cloud personal access key.
